Maryia's diagnosis of being delusional about Ahmed's love to her
Amira, Ahmed's aunt and Maryia's psychologist interviews Maryia when she comes to the psychiatric hospital during her psychotic episode after a warm introduction.
AMIRA
Okay. Tell me, why are you registered here?
MARYIA moves her head to the left side.
MARYIA
A guy was in love with me, because
I saw him looking at me in my eyes,
in a lovely way. Our classmates
were talking about us. When we were
in school, he was talking to his
friends about me. I discovered
recently that he was spying on me
with my family.
AMIRA
Has he told you about his emotions?
MARYIA
No.
AMIRA
So why do you think he loves you?
MARYIA
Because he did a lot of things
expressing his feelings to me.
AMIRA
Like what?
MARYIA
He was smiling one day at me, and
when I looked away from him, he was
angry and sad. He was like begging
me to look at him. He put the desks on
mine in the class when I was out
because I didn't respond to him.
AMIRA
Did you ever talk before?
MARYIA
No
AMIRA
Did you call him before coming to
the hospital?
MARYIA
Yes, and he was aggressive and
shouted at me.
AMIRA
Do you have any other evidence than
smiling and looking at you?
MARYIA thinks for a while.
MARYIA
No… but I have a strong feeling he does.
AMIRA
Do you love him?
MARYIA centers her head in the middle and looks to the floor.
MARYIA
I used to stop myself from loving
him, in spite of thinking of him. I
did not mean to care that much
about him.
AMIRA
He is Muslim, right?
MARYIA
And Egyptian.
AMIRA
Hmm. What does your heart say about
his love?
MARYIA
My heart and soul say it is true.
AMIRA
Can’t we consider the probability
that this is a delusion? Because we
do not have enough evidence, plus
you were irritated.
MARYIA looks cold.
MARYIA
Okay. It is done for me at all.
